A New Chapter for Epic Studios

Dear friends and clients,

After an incredible 12-year journey, the time has come to close the doors at Epic Studios in South Yarra.

While I won’t be renewing the lease due to a shift in direction with the building owner (nobody at fault, they’ve been excellent), this space has meant the world to me. It’s been more than just a studio, it’s been a hub for creativity, collaboration, and connection. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most inspiring people and photographing countless fantastic faces, products, and campaigns. This studio has forged friendships, built careers, and has helped shaped a small part of Melbourne’s creative community. For all of this, I’m endlessly grateful. When Chris and I built this space 12 years ago we had no idea how important these walls would become to us.

But this isn’t the end. It’s just the next chapter.

I’m excited to share that I’ll be building a brand-new, purpose-built studio tailored for fashion, advertising, AND video. While it won’t be in the heart of South Yarra, the new location will offer plenty of benefits: No parking hassles; no noise restrictions; and a space that’s fully mine to shape from the ground up. I can’t wait to bring it to life and will be sharing updates as the journey unfolds. Keep an eye on @epicphotoau on socials to follow the build and get sneak peeks along the way. Maybe even give me your input!

In the meantime, if you’re looking for a great studio to hire, I highly recommend chatting to Andy at Ripe Studios in Richmond or the fantastic team at Sun Studios in Port Melbourne.

And for all my clients who rely on me as their photographer, don’t worry! I’ll still be shooting as usual, either on location or in hired studios to suit the job. If you want to stay up to date with my personal photography work, you can follow along at @markjfitzgerald.

Also just a shoutout to the inner circle who are feeling the loss of this space as much as me (y’all know who you are). Those of you who have held offices in this space, shot here religiously or just dropped in regularly to stay in touch: You’ve had the biggest impact. Thank you.

Thank you again for being part of the Epic Studios story. I’ve loved every moment, and I’m truly excited for what’s next. Here’s to new beginnings, more creativity, and continuing the journey together.

With warm regards, happy memories and so much gratitude,
Mark Fitzgerald

Photography studio for hire in Melbourne

South Yarra location at a great price.

Melbourne photography studio for hire located in the heart of South Yarra, just a designer handbag’s throw from Chapel Street where you will find cafes, bars and of course the famous fashion district.  Disclaimer: we wouldn’t throw a designer handbag.

Just because you chucked some chap-laps on the way here doesn’t mean we’re all suits and Lambos.  Epic Studios is a large 250sqm New York style warehouse studio, situated on the first floor with a buzzing vibe that inspires and drives creativity. We built this studio knowing it had to be absolutely perfect for fashion and portraiture whilst retaining enough room to build a set or style an advertising shoot and by all accounts we bloody nailed it.  The building itself has a proud creative history, housing Riva Fashions textile manufacturing and then the studio of the late Eryk Fitkau, one of the true photography greats.  We hope we’re doing them proud.  Our photography studio for hire can be used for fashion photography, advertising photography, interviews, family portraits, corporate headshots or even small events or gallery exhibitions.

The space offers an open plan layout, high exposed ceilings and a 6m wide cyclorama. The foyer, makeup station, and showers are all included in the photography studio hire. Cameras, lenses, backdrops, studio lights/flashes and video lights are also available upon request.  It really is a beautiful setting for any kind of creative project from photo shoots to workshops.

We are one of Melbourne’s most affordable photography studio hire facilities so we can cater for everyone’s needs, from students to big productions.

Epic Studios is available for hire 7 days a week between 8am – 5pm (after hours available upon request) with a free carpark right outside the front door. We are also within walking distance of South Yarra train station.

Questions Most Frequently Asked

Well, you’ve scrolled a long way to get here, so you must be loving what you see, but I assume you still have some unscratched itch.  Hopefully some of these answers to FAQs will help  :)

Where is the best place to park our cars?

We are very lucky to be able to provide you with one free car park right at the door when you hire our studio.  There are other carparks next to this one, but they are allocated to resident photographers in the studio.  If you would like to use these car parks please let us know before the day of hire and we will invoice extra for the use of these car parks.  The cheapest car parking in the area is 200m away at Jam Factory where they have $7 early bird parking before 10am.

Is the studio suitable for recording video and audio?

Video: Yes.  Audio: Not really.  Please read carefully.  The space is excellent for video and we have video lighting for hire that looks great as well.  The acoustic quality of the space is quite good and there has been extensive audio treatment to create a room that is not too “live” and not too “dead”. We have had many video/audio recordings happen where clients have had great experiences.  The big, hairy BUT is that the studio is not acoustically isolated and noise from outside the building, from the other studio, or from our office space can bleed into your recordings depending on the equipment and setup you are using.
My advice is that if you need really clean audio, to book both studios during a weekend or after hours where there is less chance of audio issues.

Do you have in-house photographers and videographers?

Of course  :)  The owner of Epic Studios is fashion photographer Mark Fitzgerald, whose website you can view here: https://markfitzgerald.com.au
Mark has been a professional photographer specialising in studio photography (portraiture and fashion in particular) for over 10 years.
If Mark isn’t available he can certainly introduce you to someone from his extensive network, so if you don’t have a photographer yet please just ask us and we will make that happen for you.

Can the studio blackout?

Yes, Studio 1 is a Blackout Studio.  Even with curtains and doors open, there is almost no direct natural light in the studio, meaning that it is a completely controlled lighting environment and is not subject to weather or time of day changes.  Studio 2 is subject to a little bit of light “spill” but not direct sunlight, so it is still a very controlled lighting environment.

Is there equipment or backdrops available that aren’t listed for hire?

We are always adding new gear, backdrops and cool toys to the gear room, and sometimes that can take a while to update on the website.  If there’s something in particular you hope we have, just ask!  We might have it!

Is there a lighting tech / studio assistant on site to help?

This is a common request from photographers (often wedding photographers) who usually shoot with available light.  Despite being accomplished professionals, they have little or no experience shooting with studio lighting.  Our studio manager, Mark Fitzgerald, is a fashion photographer and, if he’s on site during your hire, is able to assist with the placement and operation of lighting.  If you’d like him to stick around there will be an additional charge.

Do you offer discounts for students or charities?

We do!  We offer a 20% discount off our studio 2 hire rate for charites, students and education providers.

Can I pop in for a tour?

Of course! I’d be happy to show you the space. Stand in it, get a feel for how you might set up and how your team might function. Most people who see the space end up booking it, so get on in here! Just let me know before you come, because if there’s a shoot happening that needs privacy then we can’t just barge in.
